Entrepreneur Meaning And Definition Review.

By Olei Messorof

There are many meanings and definitions that can be ascribed to entrepreneur. This article seeks to explore entrepreneur meaning and definition to the extent that you the reader can have a full appreciation of what the true entrepreneur is and what he does. Entrepreneurs are owners and managers of business. As far back as 1903, the Webster's Dictionary defined an entrepreneur as someone who makes products for his own benefit or account. This definition of course has evolved since then.

Most modern day entrepreneurs today do nothing with the product after creating it. Entrepreneurs also take other people's products and make a success with them nowadays. A more modern day definition, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines an entrepreneur as someone who organizes, manages and takes the risks attendant at the business. Ashoka provides a much more formal definition. He contends that an entrepreneur is an organizational society that promotes nothing but social change. This society open up new and major possibilities in all areas of human needs such as health, the environment, education, technology and many other areas.

Business entrepreneurs lead the innovations of the world and they drive social change in society. They not only start a venture but also promote the innovation of products and may produce a range of items within the same range of product. Other definitions to examine include ones from Dale Tucker and Mark Hendricks (both entrepreneurs). Tucker contends that an entrepreneur is someone who takes hold and controls his own future. He is self employed or with a team of persons to achieve certain pre-set goals. Mark Hendricks suggests that an entrepreneur is a particularly daring person who takes the risk at winning or losing at a business venture.

Entrepreneurship means what it does. Entrepreneurs are involved in planning and organizing, that is the setting up and attainment of specific goals inclusive of the monitoring of the progress of the organization. The organization engages in such activities as budgeting, finding funding, and management and financial accounting. There is also marketing and selling as well as other expert services such as branding etc., which if not provided by the entrepreneur himself will certainly be brought in.

An important function of the entrepreneur is to create the right atmosphere and culture in the organization. He must create and/or encourage good rapport, good industrial relations, creativity and productivity, so that the organization may thrive well in the marketplace. The entrepreneur also has to have a close eye on what is happening there to be able to take advantage of any business opportunity that may come by.

Entrepreneur meaning and definition is best depicted in the vision and mission of the organization. If these are infused with energy and drive then it stands a good chance to be successful in the marketplace. The entrepreneur must have an overview of all operations at all times to ensure that activities are in concert with the goals and objectives of the mission and vision. This then is the broad mandate of the entrepreneur.
