What makes a rug a modern rug?

By Jonas Rossington

Modern rugs can have an ethnic feel to them while still looking classy and contemporary. You can find cheap rugs that will do everything you need at a fraction of the price of a traditional rug. Obviously the sort of rug you choose depends on your own style.

Rug making is still an art form in many parts of the world, yet the trade has been modified and adapted to suit modern buyers and export needs. Often people assume modern rugs are made close to home in a factory, but you can still get a "modern rug" from India that retains a traditional feel to it, or that has been adapted to suit a contemporary style.

When you look for rugs, and you see modern rugs, it just means that they style and design of the rug is slightly different from a more traditional 1000 year old design. Modern rugs are not all made from synthetic or artificial materials as some may assume. A modern rug can still be made from 100% wool as well as by hand.

Although traditional rugs are still popular, modern rugs are appealing because they break the mould and can be found is such a wide variety of styles and colours and some of them still retain hints of ethnic features.

From rugs made from a solid colour, to rugs made with an endless combination of a variety of colours, you will find what you are looking for. Modern rugs can combine the methods, and materials and designs of thousands of years of rug making in order to make something for you that is truly unique and modern.

Synthetic materials are sometimes preferred as they are easier to maintain and care for, and they come in more of a variety of colours and can be designed to match a room perfectly. Yet people often prefer the feel of natural wool or animal skin underfoot. It is very much a personal preference!
